Genesis Project214 Spreading Its Roots in West Pullman.
Genesis Project214 is taking local farming in the West Pullman community to a new level by establishing a prototype for the first vertical aeroponics agri-farm. Its' hope, says Shirley Holden, is to provide the local community, restaurants and grocers with locally grown, pesticide-free vegetables and herbs.
Genesis Project214 began as the seed of an idea from Holden. The thought, she says, was to combat poverty in the West Pullman community, while introducing career possibilities to community residents around urban agriculture.
According to Holden, there will be at least ten separate locations and growing methods. Genesis Project214 first site currently sits on a city sized lot while the second pilot location is part of GenesisFoodCorp214, a partnership formed with local schools.
With West Pullman facing a poverty rate above 18% and over 18,000 single family households, veterans, and seniors living in a community designated as a food desert, Genesis Project214 remains focused on in its mission to 'restore to humanity the basic rights of food, shelter, and safety.
Currently, Genesis Project214 is working to secure the pilot site by installing a six-foot fence around the perimeter as well as propagation of it's first crops of leafy greens, tomatoes, hops, and various herbs, spices, and sprouts.
